MariaDB 01/05/1942 is the first stable version of the database server based on MySQL.

MariaDB has been created by Michael "Monty" Widenius, the creator in the days of MySQL. After some time working for SUN (MySQL owner) decided to create a company Ab Monty Program to develop MariaDB (such as a fork of MySQL, in fact holds the version number).

Moreover Widenius has led a strong campaign to keep MySQL under a separate company with the purchase of SUN by Oracle. Coincidence or not, has released the first stable version of MariaDB days after the Commission authorized the purchase of Oracle. Database engine which includes XtraDB as a substitute for InnoDB, which also belongs to Oracle.
