New frontiers for QNX

While QNX was already widely used in industrial environments for their abilities to real-time operating system, following the acquisition by RIM (Blackberry brand owners) QNX is gaining in popularity.

In the mid-2000s QNX began to have hindered certain to maintain popularity. Free software alternatives will begin to take some of your market. With that in 2007 the company decided to free the kernel source, feeling and with the possibility of community-based development. But the drawing power was low and did not involve great help for QNX.

In April 2010, QNX was bought by RIM , the maker of international mobile and had his sights on expanding into new markets telephony. So shortly after the purchase was announced that he forgot the strategy of free software and use the base that was already in the QNX automotive market in order to dig with RIM technology. Thus arose agreements with brands such as BMW, improving both RIM's position as the popularity of QNX.

Recently it was known that RIM was working on launching a competitor to the iPhone from Apple, Blackberry branded. RIM, a company best known for its flagship Blackberry, has bought the QNX software unit , responsible for developing the operating system. Since QNX is strongly established in automotive RIM could find a good position to grow on the phone in the car.

Moreover it is known that some developers of KDE (Plasma especially) who worked for QNX are no longer volunteers for reasons of incompatibility. It seems that the problem is that Plasma is a technology that also feed the Qt libraries. Remember that Qt belongs to Nokia, which is direct competition from RIM.
