Xiph.org Foundation has announced the release of Theora video codec 1.0.
This is entirely free of patents ("no patent royalties") and distributed under a BSD license that allows use in all types of software , free and proprietary.
It's been years since the release of the first alpha version of this codec and after several alphas and betas, we have available for download the v.
1.0, mature and stable.
The next version of Mozilla Firefox natively supports the codec and it will happen the same with the Opera browser.
They claim in the official announcement: "free media formats are important to ensure a future where everyone can create and share their multimedia products freely."
Theodora development will not stop in version 1.0. With the sponsorship of Red Hat Inc., Xiph.Org Foundation has been working on the next version to be called 'Thusnelda' that (report) is showing better performance. The current codec Theora is a free, fast and seeks not to consume too much cpu. The next version 'Thusnelda' is optimal for those seeking high quality and bit-rate.
