MariaDB 5.1.42 is the first stable version of the database server based on MySQL.

MariaDB has been created by Michael "Monty" Widenius, the creator at the time of MySQL. After a time working for SUN (MySQL owner) decided to create the company Monty Program Ab , to develop MariaDB (such as a fork of MySQL, in fact keeps the version number).

Moreover Widenius has led a strong campaign to keep MySQL on a separate company to buy Sun by Oracle. Coincidence or not, has released the first stable version of MariaDB days after the Commission authorized the purchase of Oracle. Database engine which also includes XtraDB as a substitute for InnoDB, which also belongs to Oracle.
